the problem

As we all know, the world is continuously growing, and with growth comes the need for new inhabitable structures for work, living, and more. The current trend in construction focuses specifically on the lowest cost and follows obsolete building standards. These standards command that the materials used in construction be of the lowest cost and typically of the lowest quality. The main problem with this is there is no concern for the negative environmental impact that is created through the usage of these materials and there is no thought towards the negative impact of the lives that will inhabit these structures.

the solution

The solution begins with education and the realization that the creation of a structure does not have to have a negative effect on the environment or on the people inside. It is a simple matter of training yourself to think more responsibly about the choices being made, both in construction and otherwise. This project serves as a method of educating others about green construction practices and how it is possible to implement these practices in this region, while under the strict guidance of the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in
Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™. This group exists to promote environmentally conscious building practices and to provide a system for others to follow when constructing or remodeling a structure.

The Building Site

Key Elements:

• Exterior lighting will be kept at a strict minimum to reduce sky-glow, increase visibility, and reduce the impact on nocturnal environments, such as the migration patterns of birds. The exterior lamps are solar powered to reduce electrical usage.

• Erosion and sediment control is a prerequisite for this type of building. Measures must be taken to ensure erosion and airborne particles are avoided at all times, including construction. This is accomplished through the use of earth dikes and sediment traps.

• At least half of the site area will be developed with native vegetation. Native vegetation will survive in the local climate without the need for excessive water and fertilization and will provide habitat while promoting biodiversity.

• Through the use of a special pervious surface in the parking area, the natural storm water flows are retained. In addition, the storm water runoff from the building is collected in a reservoir for later use such as  landscape irrigation and toilet flushing, which greatly reduces the usage of other water sources.

• The promotion of alternative transportation is an important role for this structure. Measures must be taken to reduce the amount of pollution and land development impacts through the use of automobiles. Close access to public transportation depots, bicycle storage and changing rooms for employees will be implemented. In addition, minimal overall parking spaces and preferred parking for fuel-efficient vehicles will be introduced.
